7th May 2023
Proudly presented by the Japan Australia Friendship Association | South Australia
Celebrating 28 years since the event was first held, the Kodomo No Hi Japan Festival will be returning on Sunday 7th May 2022 at Thebarton Community Centre. This festival takes its name from the festival of the same name held in Japan to celebrate children’s personalities and their happiness.
A wide variety of Japanese cultural activities can be experienced at the festival, including ikebana (flower arranging), bonsai and origami. Among the most popular activities over the years are martial arts demonstrations and displays related to trains, allowing participants to see what it is like to control one. Interesting demonstrations held during previous festivals were the preparation of mochi (rice cakes) using traditional tools, and preparation of soba noodles.
A good variety of stores featuring Japanese and other cuisines will be present so visitors do not have to worry about going hungry. It is advisable for visitors to purchase their food early as the stores attract long queues during the day.
Off-street parking for the event is available in the carpark accessible by Ashwin Parade. While not required visitors are encouraged to wear Japanese costumes for the festival.
